Join an Editorial Board

Macaw Publications welcomes expressions of interest from established researchers and academics who wish to contribute to the scholarly leadership, editorial governance, research integrity, peer-review quality, and continuing development of journals within their areas of expertise.

Editorial Board membership is a scholarly leadership responsibility and not merely an extension of reviewer registration. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent recognised doctoral qualification, demonstrate a sound, sustained, and verifiable research track record, possess relevant peer-reviewed scholarly publications, and show sufficient academic experience to contribute meaningfully to the editorial development of the selected journal.

Scholarly Leadership  •  Editorial Independence  •  Research Integrity  •  Academic Responsibility
01
SCHOLARLY LEADERSHIP

Editorial Board Membership Is an Active Academic Role

Editorial Board members contribute to the academic direction, scholarly credibility, peer-review quality, disciplinary relevance, editorial integrity, and long-term development of the journal.

Board membership should represent genuine academic participation. Individuals should not be listed merely to increase the apparent size, prestige, international profile, institutional diversity, or geographic representation of a journal.

Depending on the assigned editorial role, members may advise the Editor-in-Chief, support journal policy, contribute subject expertise, recommend qualified reviewers, assist with manuscript handling, advise on research-integrity matters, and participate in strategic journal development.

02
MANDATORY ELIGIBILITY

Who Can Apply?

Editorial Board applicants must demonstrate established scholarly competence relevant to the journal.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent recognised doctoral qualification in a discipline relevant to the journal's aims and scope.

Applicants must also demonstrate a sound, sustained, and independently verifiable research track record supported by relevant peer-reviewed scholarly publications and active or recent engagement in research.

A doctoral qualification alone is not sufficient. Appointment also depends on the applicant's academic standing, research relevance, publication activity, editorial competence, professional integrity, independence, and the current scholarly requirements of the journal.

03
SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Eligibility Criteria

01

Must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent recognised doctoral qualification relevant to the journal.

02

Must possess a sound and verifiable research track record within the proposed area of editorial expertise.

03

Must have relevant peer-reviewed scholarly publications demonstrating established subject expertise.

04

Should demonstrate active or recent research engagement relevant to the journal's scope.

05

Should normally hold a current academic, research, scientific, clinical, technical, or equivalent professional affiliation.

06

Should possess appropriate peer-review experience and an understanding of scholarly editorial processes.

07

Must be able to contribute subject or methodological expertise appropriate to the journal.

08

Must uphold editorial independence, confidentiality, publication ethics, research integrity, and responsible peer-review standards.

09

Must disclose relevant financial, institutional, academic, professional, personal, or other competing interests.

10

Must formally agree to serve before being publicly listed as an Editorial Board member.

04
SCHOLARLY STANDING

Research Track Record and Academic Contribution

Editorial Board members should have a research profile that demonstrates sufficient expertise to contribute to the scholarly direction and academic standards of the journal.

A research track record may include relevant peer-reviewed journal publications, recognised conference publications where appropriate to the discipline, funded research, books or scholarly chapters, research projects, patents, datasets, software, clinical or technical research, and other legitimate scholarly contributions.

Macaw Publications considers the quality, relevance, recency, consistency, and scholarly significance of the applicant's research profile rather than relying solely on publication counts, citation counts, h-index values, or similar numerical indicators.

05
SUBJECT ALIGNMENT

Expertise Must Match the Journal

Editorial Board appointments should reflect genuine expertise within one or more subject areas represented by the journal.

Applicants should identify specific research fields, methods, technologies, disciplines, populations, or themes in which they possess demonstrated scholarly expertise.

General academic seniority alone is not sufficient. The applicant's research record should support the area in which editorial responsibility may be assigned.

Collectively, the Editorial Board should provide appropriate scholarly coverage across the journal's stated aims and scope.

06
EDITORIAL LEADERSHIP

Role of an Editorial Board Member

01

Contribute scholarly expertise to the academic and strategic development of the journal.

02

Advise the Editor-in-Chief on the journal's aims, scope, subject coverage, and emerging research areas.

03

Support rigorous, transparent, independent, and appropriate peer-review standards.

04

Recommend suitably qualified and independent reviewers or subject specialists where appropriate.

05

Participate in manuscript handling or editorial assessment when formally assigned and authorised.

06

Contribute to periodic review of editorial policies, procedures, and scholarly standards.

07

Advise on publication ethics and research-integrity concerns where appropriate.

08

Support the responsible development of special issues, thematic collections, and emerging subject areas where relevant.

09

Strengthen genuine engagement between the journal and the scholarly community.

10

Participate meaningfully in Editorial Board activities rather than serving only as a nominal name on the journal website.

07
JOURNAL GOVERNANCE

Supporting the Editor-in-Chief

The Editor-in-Chief retains the principal scholarly leadership role defined by the journal's governance structure.

Editorial Board members provide subject expertise, advice, and editorial support within their assigned responsibilities. They should respect the journal's established decision-making, conflict-of-interest, peer-review, and research-integrity procedures.

Board membership does not provide unrestricted authority to make commitments, appointments, policy changes, financial decisions, or public representations on behalf of Macaw Publications unless such authority has been expressly assigned.

08
POLICY OVERSIGHT

Contribute to Editorial Standards and Policies

Editorial Board members may be invited to advise on policies concerning peer review, authorship, publication ethics, conflicts of interest, research data, artificial intelligence, corrections, retractions, special issues, and other areas relevant to responsible scholarly publishing.

Policy advice should be based on scholarly integrity, journal needs, disciplinary relevance, transparency, and fair treatment of authors and reviewers.

Editorial policies should not be altered merely to increase publication volume, author charges, citation indicators, or indexing prospects.

09
PEER REVIEW OVERSIGHT

Maintain Rigorous Scholarly Assessment

Where Editorial Board members participate in manuscript handling, they should seek reviewers whose expertise, independence, and professional standing are appropriate to the manuscript.

Reviewer selection must not be manipulated to obtain a predetermined editorial decision.

Reviewer reports should be assessed critically rather than treated simply as numerical votes for acceptance or rejection.

Where reviews materially conflict, additional scholarly assessment may be sought when appropriate.

10
EDITORIAL INDEPENDENCE

Scholarly Decisions Must Remain Independent

Editorial Board members must exercise scholarly judgement independently and should not seek to influence editorial decisions for inappropriate personal, financial, institutional, commercial, political, or reputational reasons.

Article Processing Charges, sponsorship, advertising, author identity, institutional prestige, personal relationships, citation objectives, or ability to pay must not determine the scholarly outcome of a manuscript.

Editorial decisions should remain based on scholarly merit, methodological quality, relevance, research integrity, and the journal's editorial standards.

11
COMPETING INTERESTS

Disclosure and Recusal

Editorial Board members must disclose relevant financial, academic, professional, institutional, collaborative, supervisory, competitive, personal, or other competing interests.

A member should not control the editorial handling of a manuscript where a material conflict exists or where reasonable concerns about impartiality could arise.

Where recusal is necessary, editorial responsibility should be transferred to an appropriately independent editor.

12
INDEPENDENT HANDLING

Submissions from Editorial Board Members

Editorial Board members may submit legitimate scholarly work to a journal where permitted by the journal's policies.

However, a member must not select reviewers, access confidential editorial deliberations, influence the handling editor, or participate in the publication decision concerning their own manuscript.

Such submissions should be handled independently and should undergo the same applicable scholarly, ethical, and peer-review standards as comparable submissions.

Editorial Board membership does not guarantee manuscript acceptance.

13
RESEARCH INTEGRITY

Protect the Scholarly Record

Editorial Board members should support appropriate responses to credible concerns involving plagiarism, fabrication, falsification, inappropriate image manipulation, authorship, duplicate publication, undisclosed competing interests, fabricated references, citation manipulation, peer-review manipulation, or other research-integrity matters.

Concerns should be evaluated on evidence and handled through authorised editorial and publisher procedures.

Editorial Board members should avoid premature accusations and should maintain appropriate confidentiality during integrity enquiries.

14
CITATION ETHICS

No Coercive or Manipulative Citation Practices

Editorial Board members must not require authors to add citations primarily to increase citations to themselves, other editors, reviewers, institutions, the journal, or Macaw Publications.

Citation recommendations should be made only where they have a legitimate scholarly relationship with the manuscript.

Editorial appointments must not be used to create artificial citation networks or manipulate author-level or journal-level bibliometric indicators.

15
CONFIDENTIALITY

Protect Unpublished Research and Editorial Information

Editorial Board members must protect unpublished manuscripts, reviewer reports, editorial correspondence, editorial deliberations, research-integrity enquiries, and other confidential information obtained through their journal role.

Confidential information must not be used for personal research, competitive advantage, financial benefit, or another unauthorised purpose.

Confidentiality obligations continue after the completion of a manuscript decision and, where applicable, after the member's Editorial Board service ends.

16
AI & GENERATIVE AI

Human Editorial Responsibility

Editorial Board members remain responsible for scholarly assessments, recommendations, and editorial judgements made within their assigned roles.

Unpublished manuscripts, reviewer reports, supplementary files, confidential correspondence, or substantial confidential manuscript content should not be uploaded to public generative AI systems where confidentiality, retention, and downstream use cannot be appropriately controlled.

Generative AI should not replace substantive human scholarly judgement or independently determine editorial outcomes.

Members must comply with the applicable AI & Generative AI Use Policy.

17
SPECIAL ISSUES

Oversight of Special Collections

Editorial Board members may be invited to contribute to the development or oversight of special issues, thematic collections, or Guest Editor-led scholarly initiatives.

Special-issue content should remain within the journal's scope and should be subject to appropriate peer review, conflicts-of- interest management, research-integrity standards, and permanent editorial oversight.

Special issues should not be used primarily to increase publication volume, author charges, citations, or apparent journal activity.

18
JOURNAL DEVELOPMENT

Support Responsible Scholarly Growth

Editorial Board members may advise on emerging subject areas, research trends, scholarly communities, article types, methodological developments, and opportunities for improving the academic relevance of the journal.

Journal development should focus on genuine scholarly quality rather than artificial expansion of publication volume.

Changes to journal scope or editorial priorities should be academically justified and reflected transparently in the journal's public information.

19
BOARD COMPOSITION

Scholarly and Geographic Representation

Editorial Board composition should collectively reflect the expertise required by the journal and the scholarly communities it serves.

Where appropriate, journals should seek meaningful disciplinary, institutional, national, geographic, methodological, and career- stage diversity among appropriately qualified members.

Diversity must arise from genuine scholarly participation. Affiliations, appointments, countries, or professional relationships must never be fabricated or manipulated to create an artificial appearance of international representation.

Excessive concentration of the Editorial Board within a single institution or closely connected professional group should be avoided where a broader qualified scholarly community is reasonably available.

20
PUBLIC TRANSPARENCY

Editorial Board Information

Each journal should maintain an accurate and current public list of its Editor-in-Chief, editors, and Editorial Board members.

Public information should normally identify the member's professional name, editorial role, current institutional affiliation, and country.

ORCID iDs, institutional profiles, or other appropriate professional profile links may also be displayed.

Outdated, unauthorised, inactive, or inaccurate listings should be corrected when identified.

21
MEMBER CONSENT

Agreement to Serve

An individual's name and affiliation should be added to a journal's public Editorial Board only after the individual has been appropriately considered and has agreed to serve.

Appointment communication should identify the journal, proposed editorial role, expected responsibilities, and applicable editorial policies.

Acceptance of appointment indicates willingness to participate in the reasonable scholarly responsibilities associated with the role.

22
ACTIVE MEMBERSHIP

Editorial Board Membership Requires Participation

Editorial Board membership should not be purely honorary or nominal.

Members should respond within reasonable periods to important journal communications and should contribute to appropriate editorial, scholarly, or advisory activities when reasonably requested.

The nature and frequency of participation may vary depending on the assigned role, discipline, publication volume, journal structure, and operational needs.

23
BOARD GOVERNANCE

Periodic Review of Membership

Editorial Board composition should be reviewed periodically to ensure that member information remains current and that the collective expertise of the board remains appropriate to the journal.

Periodic review may consider continuing research activity, current institutional affiliation, responsiveness, editorial participation, subject relevance, professional conduct, competing interests, and evolving journal requirements.

Members should inform the journal when their affiliation, designation, contact information, scholarly status, or other material professional information changes.

24
MEMBERSHIP STATUS

Resignation, Removal and Updating Membership

An Editorial Board member may request to discontinue their service by communicating with the journal or publisher.

Membership may also be reconsidered where a member becomes persistently inactive, cannot be contacted, no longer possesses relevant expertise, provides materially inaccurate professional information, breaches confidentiality, fails to disclose relevant competing interests, engages in inappropriate editorial conduct, or presents another serious concern affecting journal integrity.

When membership ends, the journal website should be updated so that the public Editorial Board information remains accurate.

25
APPOINTMENT INTEGRITY

Editorial Board Membership Is Not Purchased

Editorial Board appointment should be based on legitimate scholarly qualifications, expertise, journal need, and professional suitability.

Applicants should not offer payment, gifts, citations, reciprocal publication arrangements, manuscript referrals, or other benefits in exchange for Editorial Board appointment.

Editorial Board membership does not guarantee publication of the member's manuscripts, preferential peer review, accelerated acceptance, citations, indexing, academic promotion, or another scholarly advantage.

26
PROFESSIONAL STATUS

Nature of Editorial Board Appointment

Editorial Board membership represents scholarly service to the relevant journal.

Appointment does not by itself establish employment, partnership, ownership, legal representation, or institutional authority on behalf of Macaw Publications.

Any separate contractual, administrative, financial, or professional relationship applies only where it has been expressly established through an appropriate written arrangement.

APPOINTMENT PROCESS

How Applications Are Evaluated

Editorial Board appointment is selective and is not automatic.

Applications may be considered by the Editor-in-Chief, authorised senior editorial personnel, journal management, and/or Macaw Publications according to the journal's governance structure.

Assessment may consider academic qualifications, subject expertise, research record, publication activity, editorial and peer-review experience, institutional affiliation, scholarly standing, competing interests, professional conduct, board composition, and current journal requirements.

An applicant may satisfy the general eligibility criteria but not be appointed where the journal does not currently require additional representation in that particular scholarly field.
