Scope & Relevance
Whether the manuscript is relevant to the journal's aims and scope and addresses an appropriate scholarly question.
Macaw Publications welcomes expressions of interest from qualified researchers and academics who are willing to contribute their expertise to independent, confidential, constructive, and rigorous scholarly peer review.
Reviewer selection is based on academic qualification, subject expertise, research experience, scholarly publication record, professional integrity, independence, and the current peer-review requirements of the relevant journal. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent recognised doctoral qualification and demonstrate a sound and verifiable research track record in the proposed area of reviewing expertise.
Peer reviewers make an important contribution to scholarly publishing by providing independent expert assessment of manuscripts submitted for publication.
Reviewer reports assist editors in evaluating the originality, relevance, methodological quality, reliability, clarity, research integrity, and scholarly contribution of submitted work.
Constructive peer review can also assist authors in improving the quality, interpretation, reporting, and presentation of their research.
Macaw Publications therefore seeks reviewers who possess appropriate academic qualifications, current subject expertise, a strong research background, and a demonstrated commitment to responsible scholarly evaluation.
A prospective reviewer must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent recognised doctoral degree in a discipline relevant to the scope of the journal for which the applicant wishes to review.
Applicants must also demonstrate a sound and verifiable research track record through relevant peer-reviewed publications, research activity, academic or professional experience, and recognised scholarly contributions within their field.
Possession of a doctoral degree alone does not automatically qualify an applicant for reviewer appointment. The applicant's recent research activity, publication record, subject expertise, and suitability for the journal will also be considered.
Applicants should satisfy the following requirements before submitting an expression of interest.
Must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent recognised doctoral degree in a relevant academic or professional discipline.
Must demonstrate a sound and verifiable research track record in the proposed area of reviewing expertise.
Must have relevant peer-reviewed scholarly publications demonstrating subject or methodological competence.
Should normally hold a current academic, research, scientific, clinical, technical, or professional affiliation appropriate to the proposed reviewing field.
Must possess specific subject or methodological expertise relevant to manuscripts considered by the selected journal.
Must be capable of evaluating scholarly work independently, critically, objectively, and constructively.
Must agree to maintain confidentiality of unpublished manuscripts and editorial information.
Must disclose relevant competing interests before accepting a review assignment.
Must provide accurate and independently verifiable academic, professional, and scholarly information.
Must be willing to complete accepted review assignments within the timeframe communicated by the journal where reasonably possible.
Reviewer selection is based not only on academic qualification but also on evidence of genuine and relevant scholarly activity.
A sound research track record may be demonstrated through peer-reviewed journal publications, conference publications where relevant to the discipline, research projects, funded research, books or scholarly chapters, patents, technical or clinical research contributions, and other verifiable academic activities relevant to the applicant's area of expertise.
Macaw Publications considers the relevance, quality, recency, and scholarly significance of the applicant's research profile rather than publication count alone.
The applicant's scholarly work should demonstrate sufficient knowledge and experience to evaluate manuscripts within the proposed reviewing field.
Macaw Publications or the relevant journal may verify reviewer qualifications and research credentials before or during reviewer selection.
Verification may include appropriate review of institutional webpages, university profiles, ORCID records, recognised scholarly databases, researcher profiles, publication records, or other legitimate professional sources.
Applicants must not provide fabricated academic qualifications, false institutional affiliations, misleading academic designations, another person's researcher identifier, or manipulated scholarly credentials.
Where information cannot be reasonably verified, additional clarification or supporting documentation may be requested.
Applicants should provide complete and accurate professional information to enable appropriate assessment of their eligibility, expertise, and research background.

Name of the Macaw Publications journal for which the applicant wishes to serve as a reviewer.
Brief statement describing how the applicant's expertise aligns with the scope of the selected journal.
Applicants should identify their specific research and methodological expertise rather than providing only a very broad disciplinary description.
For example, an applicant from Computer Science should provide specific expertise such as machine learning, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, computer vision, data science, software engineering, natural language processing, networks, cloud computing, or another genuine specialist field.
Specific expertise information helps editors identify reviewers whose scholarly knowledge is closely aligned with the subject, methodology, and technical requirements of a manuscript.
Macaw Publications and the relevant journal may evaluate the applicant's doctoral qualification, research track record, publication history, subject expertise, institutional affiliation, professional identity, methodological competence, conflicts of interest, and suitability for the journal.
Selection also depends on whether manuscripts are available in the applicant's specific area of expertise and whether the journal currently requires additional reviewers in that field.
A suitable applicant may be retained in the reviewer database without receiving an immediate review assignment.
Relevance of doctoral qualification.
Quality and relevance of research track record.
Recent scholarly publication activity.
Subject and methodological expertise.
Professional and institutional credentials.
Independence from authors and manuscripts.
Absence of material competing interests.
Previous reviewer performance and timeliness where applicable.
Ability to provide constructive and technically meaningful assessment.
The journal's current editorial requirements.
Reviewers must be able to provide an independent scholarly assessment of manuscripts assigned to them.
Financial, academic, professional, institutional, collaborative, supervisory, competitive, personal, or other competing interests that could reasonably affect impartial judgement should be disclosed promptly to the handling editor.
Where a reviewer is uncertain whether a particular relationship constitutes a conflict, the circumstances should be disclosed to the editor before the review is accepted.
The handling editor will determine whether the reviewer may proceed with the assignment.
Reviewers must not distribute, reproduce, publish, disclose, discuss, or otherwise share manuscript content with unauthorised individuals.
Unpublished ideas, methods, data, figures, results, software, models, algorithms, or other information obtained through peer review must not be used for personal research, competitive advantage, commercial purposes, or other unauthorised activity.
Confidentiality continues after completion of the review, regardless of whether the manuscript is accepted, rejected, withdrawn, or subsequently published.
Reviewers remain personally responsible for the scholarly assessment submitted to the journal.
Unpublished manuscripts, supplementary files, confidential editorial correspondence, reviewer instructions, or substantial confidential manuscript content should not be uploaded to public generative AI systems or external services where confidentiality, retention, and downstream use cannot be appropriately controlled.
Generative AI should not replace the reviewer's own substantive scholarly judgement or independently generate the reviewer's expert assessment.
Reviewers must comply with the applicable Macaw Publications AI & Generative AI Use Policy and any journal-specific instructions.
Evaluate the manuscript objectively and independently.
Review only within areas of genuine competence.
Maintain confidentiality throughout and after review.
Disclose relevant competing interests.
Provide constructive, evidence-based, and professionally expressed comments.
Distinguish major scholarly concerns from minor presentation issues.
Complete accepted assignments within the agreed timeframe where reasonably possible.
Report credible ethical or research-integrity concerns confidentially to the handling editor.
Avoid coercive, excessive, irrelevant, or self-serving citation recommendations.
Do not delegate the manuscript or review assignment to another person without prior editorial permission.
Whether the manuscript is relevant to the journal's aims and scope and addresses an appropriate scholarly question.
Whether the manuscript provides a meaningful scholarly contribution in relation to existing research.
Whether the research design, methods, datasets, experiments, analyses, models, or scholarly approach are appropriate.
Whether the results are presented clearly and supported by the evidence reported in the manuscript.
Whether interpretations and conclusions are supported by the findings and relevant limitations are acknowledged.
Whether the manuscript raises credible concerns regarding originality, reporting, ethics, data, authorship, citations, or other publication-integrity matters.
Review reports should be sufficiently specific and evidence-based to assist the editor in understanding the scholarly basis of the reviewer's recommendation.
Comments should focus on the manuscript rather than on the personal characteristics, nationality, institution, seniority, or presumed background of the authors.
Personal criticism, abusive language, discriminatory comments, humiliation, threats, hostility, or other inappropriate communication is not acceptable.
Reviewers are encouraged to identify strengths as well as substantive areas requiring revision.
Reviewers may identify relevant literature that should reasonably be considered where its inclusion would improve scholarly context, methodological accuracy, interpretation, or engagement with existing research.
Reviewers must not require unnecessary citations primarily to increase citations to their own publications, collaborators, institutions, preferred journals, editors, or Macaw Publications journals.
Suggested references should have a legitimate and identifiable scholarly relationship with the manuscript.
Reviewers should accept an invitation only where they have sufficient expertise and can reasonably complete the review within the timeframe communicated by the journal.
If additional time is required, the reviewer should notify the handling editor promptly.
Where the reviewer becomes unable to complete the assignment, the journal should be informed as soon as practicable so that another reviewer may be appointed.
Macaw Publications recognises peer review as an important form of scholarly service.
Where an individual journal provides reviewer certificates, acknowledgements, reviewer records, or other recognition, such recognition should remain consistent with the journal's confidentiality and reviewer-anonymity arrangements.
Completion of peer review does not automatically confer Editorial Board membership, employment status, publication priority, or preferential editorial treatment.
Suitable applicants may be included in the reviewer database of the relevant journal to support future manuscript matching.
Inclusion in a reviewer database does not guarantee a particular number or frequency of review invitations.
Reviewers are encouraged to update the journal where there is a material change in their affiliation, contact information, research expertise, availability, or professional status.
Reviewer participation is not necessarily permanent.
A reviewer may request discontinuation of future invitations or may update areas of expertise and availability.
The journal may also discontinue reviewer assignments where qualifications or expertise are no longer appropriate, contact information is inaccurate, review quality is repeatedly inadequate, confidentiality is breached, relevant conflicts are not disclosed, reviewer identity cannot be verified, or serious reviewer-integrity concerns arise.
Impersonating another reviewer or researcher.
Providing fabricated qualifications, affiliations, or publication records.
Sharing confidential manuscript material without authorisation.
Using unpublished information obtained through peer review for personal or competitive advantage.
Failing to disclose a material competing interest.
Coercive or manipulative citation requests.
Submitting fabricated or intentionally misleading reviews.
Unauthorised delegation of a review assignment.
Participation in manipulated, fraudulent, or organised peer-review arrangements.
Abusive, discriminatory, threatening, or personally derogatory review conduct.
